In Brief
Two sugarcane cooperative societies in Uttarakhand, originally operating across what became two States after Uttar Pradesh's bifurcation in 2000, were administratively reorganized to confine their operations to a single State. The question was whether they automatically became "Multi-State Cooperative Societies" under federal law despite this reorganization. The Supreme Court held that cooperative societies whose operations are confined to a single State after reorganization cannot be deemed Multi-State Cooperative Societies. The deeming fiction under the relevant act applies only when societies genuinely serve multiple States and cannot override state reorganization measures already completed under the applicable framework.
