S. Sreesanth, a cricketer, was banned for life by BCCI's disciplinary committee for alleged spot-fixing and betting during IPL 2013, based on telephone conversations with a bookie. Though discharged in the subsequent criminal case, the disciplinary proceedings continued. The Supreme Court upheld his guilt on the charges but found the life-time ban disproportionate. The Court held that while disciplinary findings deserve deference, the sanction must consider aggravating and mitigating factors under the Anti-Corruption Code. The Court set aside the life ban and directed reconsideration of the appropriate punishment within the prescribed range of 5 years to life.
