Shishu Pal @ Shish Ram & Ors vs Surjeet & Ors

Bench: 2 — Sanjay Karol, Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh

In Brief

A woman died in a motor accident in 2001, but her family fought for 25 years to get fair compensation, with their case pending in the High Court for 20 years. The Supreme Court ruled that homemakers' unpaid domestic work has real economic value and introduced a new compensation head called "Loss of Domestic Care" worth ₹30,000 per month minimum. The Court also directed that motor accident cases should not stay pending in High Courts for more than four years and renamed homemakers as "Nation Builders" to recognize their invaluable contributions to households and society.
