In Brief
The Supreme Court considered applications by candidates belonging to "special backward classes" under the Rajasthan Special Backward Classes Act, 2015, which the High Court had struck down. These candidates had been declared successful in government recruitment exams but were not appointed due to the High Court's decision. Balancing their claims against general category candidates' rights, the Court permitted the State to appoint 1,252 such candidates to supernumerary posts on a temporary basis pending final appeal outcome. Critically, these temporary appointments confer no permanent rights, and the State must simultaneously fill all originally advertised posts without applying the impugned Act's reservation provisions."
