In Brief
The Supreme Court disposed of contempt petitions and clarification applications filed by Tamil Nadu and others regarding implementation of the Cauvery River water-sharing Award. The Central Government had framed a Cauvery Water Management Scheme under Section 6A of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, following the Court's judgment modifying the Tribunal's Award. The Court held that while the scheme need not follow every Tribunal recommendation, it must comply with the substantive Award as modified. State objections based on Entry 17 (water/irrigation) of the Constitution were rejected. The Court disposed of the contempt actions upon the Centre's assurance to expeditiously notify and implement the scheme before the monsoon season.
