State of Tamil Nadu vs State of Karnataka and Another

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Tamil Nadu challenged the construction of a water resource project by Karnataka, seeking interim relief and constitution of an Inter-State River Water Disputes Tribunal. The Court found that Karnataka had obtained all requisite sanctions and the project was 75% complete. The Court held that no interim relief was justified on a prima facie basis. The Court directed Tamil Nadu to formally apply under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956 within four weeks to request tribunal constitution, rather than rely on informal communications with the Central Government.
