In Brief
Tamil Nadu sought urgent implementation of OBC reservation in All India Quota seats at Government medical colleges for the 2020-2021 academic year. Although the High Court held that State law could legally extend such reservation, it declined immediate implementation as the admission process had commenced. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision, finding that implementing the policy mid-process would require re-notifying candidates and restructuring seat matrices, causing substantial administrative disruption. The Court directed a Union committee to finalize modalities in consultation with States for implementation from 2021-2022 onwards.
