Subramani was convicted of murdering his wife Chennamma by pouring kerosene on her and setting her on fire during a quarrel on 20 July 2000. Chennamma died three days later from 80-90% burn injuries. The Trial Court had acquitted him, but the High Court reversed the acquittal. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction, finding credible eyewitness testimony from the couple's daughter, the deceased's conscious dying declaration, medical evidence confirming her fitness to make statements, and physical evidence including recovered kerosene and burnt cloth. The Court sentenced him to life imprisonment under Section 302 IPC and two years imprisonment under Section 498A IPC (cruelty to wife).
