In Brief
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) sought review of a Supreme Court judgment directing it to absorb temporary and badli (substitute) workers as permanent employees pursuant to operative Tulpule and Jamdar Awards. LIC argued that a 1989 compromise substituted these awards and that implementation would impose a financial burden of approximately Rs. 7087 crores. The Court held that review petitions based on repetition of rejected arguments are impermissible. While dismissing LIC's review petition, the Court modified the relief by reducing full back wages to 50% of back wages with consequential benefits, calculated from the date of entitlement to superannuation, considering LIC's statutory status and public interest. The implementation order was directed to be complied with within eight weeks."
