Yasmeen Mohammad Zahid was arrested at Delhi airport in August 2016 while attempting to travel to Afghanistan with her child. She was convicted of criminal conspiracy under Section 120B IPC and support to a terrorist organisation (ISIS) under Section 38 of the UAPA, but acquitted of charges under Sections 125 IPC, 39, and 40 of the UAPA. The High Court had reduced her sentence on grounds of sympathy. The Supreme Court upheld her convictions under Sections 120B IPC and 38 of the UAPA, restored the original substantive sentences imposed by the trial court, and dismissed her appeals challenging conviction while also dismissing the Union's challenge to her acquittal on the other charges.
