“If you feel like bursting crackers, go to a state where it is allowed,” SC to MP Manoj Tiwari on firecracker ban imposed by Delhi

Today, the Supreme Court was hearing a writ petition filed last year by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari against the ban on firecrackers in Delhi ahead of Diwali in October 2022. A two-judge bench including Justice AS Bopanna and Justice MM Sundresh told Tiwari that it would not interfere with the firecracker ban imposed by Delhi. During the argument, BJP MP Tiwari’s counsel argued that an absolute ban on the sale and use of firecrackers has been imposed by the Delhi Government despite the Supreme Court’s order against a blanket ban. He further said, “There are many states imposing complete ban despite the orders of this court.” Justice Bopanna orally remarked, “Locally, if there is a ban, there is a ban. We will not interfere.” He added, “You can find other ways to celebrate.” Justice Bopanna also said, “If you feel like bursting crackers, go to a state where it is allowed.” Further added, “Do something for the people. You should be telling your supporters not to do it.” Earlier in 2022, the bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and MR Shah while hearing the same matter quoted “Spend your money on sweets…Let people breathe clean air.”
