Arms License Case: Supreme Court grants bail to MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari

On March 18, 2024, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to the Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in connection with an arms license case. The bench said, “We do not propose to observe anything on merits as it would prejudice the case. Taking into account the period of incarceration and the offences alleged, the petitioner is to be enlarged on bail subject to terms and conditions as set by the trial court.” He was detained under Section 3(2) of the National Security Act, 1980 by the Chitrakoot District Magistrate. The matter was heard today by a two-judge bench comprising Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta. During the proceedings, Additional Advocate Genera Garima Prashad represented the State of Uttar Pradesh and Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for Abbas Ansari.
