Today (May 28, 2024), the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, and 4 others in the 2002 murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. The order was pronounced today on the appeals moved by Ram Rahim and 4 others, Avtar Singh, Jasbir Singh, Sabdil Singh, and Krishan Lal, who had been convicted by a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) Court in Haryana’s Panchkula in 2021. Ram Rahim was also convicted in a rape case for a 20-year jail term and for murdering a journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati in which a life sentence was awarded to him that will run after the completion of 20 years term. Today, the HC bench allowed his appeal against conviction in a murder case of a former Dera manager under Section 120B, Section 302, and Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
