Sikkim High Court announces a menstrual leave policy for women employees working in its Registry

In a recent order, the Sikkim High Court (HC) announced a menstrual leave policy for women employees working in its Registry. It clarified that a recommendation from the medical officer would be necessary to avail of menstrual leave. The order was passed on May 27, 2024, a day ahead of World Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28), to spread awareness about Menstrual Hygiene Management as well as promote good menstrual health and hygiene. The order passed by the Sikkim HC reads, “Women employees in the High Court Registry may henceforth avail menstrual leave of 2-3 days in a month, provided they approach the Medical Officer attached to the High Court first and obtain the latter’s recommendation for such leave.” It added, “Their leave account shall not be debited on availing such leave.”
