In a significant move to ensure the safety of the legal community, the Telangana Legislative Assembly has officially passed the Telangana Advocates Protection Bill, 2026. The legislation aims to protect lawyers from rising instances of violence, intimidation, and false cases.

Overview of the Bill
Following in the footsteps of Rajasthan and Karnataka, Telangana has become one of the few Indian states to enact dedicated legislation for the protection of advocates. The Bill was introduced by the state government following a resolution by the Bar Council of Telangana and extensive consultations with high court bar associations and various legal forums.

The primary objective of the law is to provide a secure environment for advocates to perform their professional duties without fear of physical attacks or targeted harassment.

Key Features of the Legislation

  • Police Protection: The Bill includes provisions for providing police security to advocates who face credible threats to their life or safety due to their professional work.
  • Grievance Redressal: A dedicated mechanism will be established to address the complaints of advocates regarding their security and professional hurdles.
  • Protection Against False Cases: The law introduces safeguards to prevent the filing of malicious or frivolous criminal cases against advocates, which are often used as a tool for intimidation.
  • Non-Interference in Duties: It emphasizes that no person shall obstruct or prevent an advocate from discharging their duties toward their clients.

Government’s Stand
State Minister for Legislative Affairs, Sridhar Babu Duddilla, stated that this legislation would not only ensure the physical security of advocates but also boost the confidence of the entire legal fraternity. He highlighted that the government is committed to upholding the rule of law by protecting those who represent it in courts.

The Bill is seen as a major victory for the legal community in Telangana, which has been demanding such a law following several high-profile attacks on lawyers in recent years.
