Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025: Supreme Court To Continue Hearing Tomorrow

Today (April 16, 2025), the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court (SC) of India, consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, Justice KV Viswanathan, and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, heard a batch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. The petitions, addressed, were filed by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha, All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, Congress MP Md Jawed, TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, Indian Union Muslim League, Samastha Kerala Jamiatul Ulema, SP MP Zia Ur Rehman, Communist Party of India, TVK President & Tamil actor Vijay, YSRC Party, Delhi MLA Amanatullah Khan, Imam of Jama Masjid Bengaluru, Association for Protection of Civil Rights, and others. On the other hand, some states, including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Assam, Haryana, and Chhattisgarh approached the top court to support the constitutionality of the Act. The SC bench will continue hearing the matter tomorrow (Thursday, April 17, 2025). While adjourning the hearing, CJI expressed concerns over the violence that broke out in West Bengal against the Act. He said, “One thing is very disturbing is the violence that is taking place. If the matter is pending here it should not happen.”
