On February 12, 2024 (Monday), the Supreme Court (SC) of India extended the interim bail granted to Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. The bench observed that no report has been received from the Trial Court on the progress of the case since the last date of hearing, September 26, 2023; therefore, it adjourned the case. It further directed the SC registry to obtain the status of the report and ordered the extension of interim bail granted to Ashish Mishra. The matter was heard today by a two-judge bench consisting of Justice Surya Kant and Justice K.V. Viswanathan. In the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, Ashish Mishra’s vehicles allegedly ran over a group of farmers in Uttar Pradesh resulting in the death of 8 persons including a journalist, 4 farmers, and 3 BJP workers.
