Apex court struck down the Maharashtra Backward Class report given by state s commission granting 27percent OBC quota in local bodies

The pinnacle court today struck down the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission’s interim report suggesting the bringing back of 27 % reservation for OBCs in local body polls. 

The two-member bench composed of the Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar today struck down the plea by the state government of Maharashtra and disapproved the commission report.

The Supreme Court also ordered the go dog Maharashtra and the state election commissioner to not act upon the commission’s report. 

The court further noted that the commission delivered and made the interim report without proper analysis, study, and critical research.

The benchmark strongly ordered the state election commissioner to call off the coming polls without reservation for the quota of OBC.

The bench also told SEC to inform the poll schedule without delay for eight hundred gram panchayats, five municipal corporations, and one hundred municipal councils, polls to which have been postponed.

The government of Maharashtra had filed a petition in the supreme court requesting the to allow and implement the quota of other backward class in the remaining local body elections as per the suggestion of the state’s OBC Commission.

The top court had stayed the 27% quota in local bodies polls by the state government of Maharashtra in December last year.
