In a recent development to the Karur Stampede case, the Supreme Court (SC) of India, today (October 13, 2025), ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the matter. The bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice NV Anjaria also constituted a 3-member Supervisory Committee. The top court directed that the former SC judge Justice Ajay Rastogi will monitor the probe along with two senior IPS officers. The bench said, “The issues have a bearing on the fundamental rights of the citizens and the incident which has shaken the national conscience, deserves a fair and impartial investigation. As such, as an interim measure, direction deserves to be issued to hand over the investigation to the CBI with a view to fair investigation of the issue. There cannot be any doubt that fair investigation is deserved by the citizens.” Earlier, on October 11, the SC raised multiple questions regarding the decision of the Madras High Court to form an SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe the Karur Stampede that claimed 41 lives during a political event organized by Vijay’s party (TVK).
