SC adjourns Umar Khalid’s bail application after Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra recuses: to be heard before another composition on 17 August

Today, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court (SC) including Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice AS Bopanna adjourned the hearing of the bail application of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar and activist Umar Khalid after Justice Mishra recused. He has been behind bars since September 2020 and was awaiting his trial in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. The SC bench was hearing the Special Leave Petition filed by Umar Khalid against the 2022 order of the Delhi High Court denying him bail. While initiating the SC proceedings regarding the matter today, Justice Bopanna said “This will come before some other bench. There is some difficulty on the part of my brother”. The bench further ordered to place the matter before another composition on 17 August 2023.
