Three Chief Justices among five names recommended by Collegium for Supreme Court

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud (the Supreme Court Collegium) recommended five names of high court judges to appoint them as judges of the Supreme Court. It has been addressed that working strength of the Supreme Court will rise to 33 if the Central government clears these recommendations. The name of the recommended judges is listed as follows:

  • Justice Pankaj Mithal whose parent High Court is Allahabad High Court and worked as Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. He is serving as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, currently. If appointed, his tenure will be of over three years i.e. until 2026.
  • Justice Sanjay Karol is the former Chief Justice of Tripura High Court and his parent High Court is Himachal Pradesh. He is currently serving as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. His tenure will be the same as of Justice Pankaj Mithal, 3 years.
  • Justice PV Sanjay Kumar served as judge of Haryana and Punjab High Court and is currently a Chief Justice of Manipur High Court. Telangana is his parent High Court and if he is appointed as a judge, he will have a tenure of 5 years.
  • Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah served at Andhra Pradesh High Court and was transferred back to Patna High Court which is his parent High Court. Being the second most senior judge at Patna High Court, he will have tenure until 2028.
  • Justice Manoj Misra was elevated as an additional judge on November 21, 2011, and after 3 years he was declared a permanent judge. He is currently serving as a judge at Allahabad High Court. He will have the longest tenure of 7 years if appointed.
