Ajit Singh vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Anr

Bench: 3 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Ajit Singh was arrested on 30 March 2017 and charged with cheating and forgery of valuable securities under the Indian Penal Code. Although the police filed a charge-sheet, the trial had not commenced. The Supreme Court held that prolonged pre-trial custody without commencement of trial warranted bail relief. The Court directed his release on bail, authorised the trial court to impose conditions as deemed fit, and ordered expeditious conclusion of the trial. The High Court's order was set aside and the appeal was allowed.
