The Supreme Court examined four writ petitions challenging two animal welfare rules: the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Regulation of Live Stocks, Markets) Rules, 2017, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Care and Maintenance of Case Property Animals) Rules, 2017. The Madras High Court had stayed these rules following claims they were unworkable. The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide stay and accepted the Union's statement that amended rules would be re-notified after reconsideration. The Court directed that adequate time be granted to stakeholders before implementation to enable legal challenges if desired. The writ petitions and pending applications were disposed of accordingly.
