In Brief
The All India Judges Association sought to establish an All India Judicial Commission to review service conditions of subordinate judges, including pay scales, retirement age and pensions. The Supreme Court granted the petition and appointed a two-member Commission comprising a former Supreme Court Judge as Chairman and a former High Court Judge as Member. The Commission was tasked with evolving principles governing pay structures, examining current service conditions, recommending interim relief, and establishing a permanent mechanism for periodic review. All states, high courts and the Union of India were directed to provide full assistance and necessary data to the Commission, which was requested to complete its work within 18 months."
