In Brief
This 2017 judgment addressed the reconstitution of an Oversight Committee following expiry of the former committee's term. The Court accepted the Union of India's proposal to appoint five senior medical doctors to oversee the Medical Council of India's functioning. The new Committee was empowered to approve MCI decisions, issue remedial directions, and function until an alternative government mechanism was established. However, final decision-making authority remained with the Government of India, which must record reasons if departing from the Committee's recommendations. Aggrieved parties retained the right to challenge government decisions in accordance with law.
