Ankita Meena vs University of Delhi

Bench: 3 — V. Ramasubramanian

In Brief

A law student who joined a 3-year LLB course at Delhi University fell short of attendance in the 4th semester due to maternity leave and a university-wide strike. The University denied her permission to appear in examinations, leading to litigation. The Supreme Court held that although the original dispute had become moot (the student subsequently completed the entire course and obtained results in other semesters), special circumstances warranted relief. The Court directed the University to declare the 5th semester supplementary examination results and issue the provisional degree with certificates if she had passed, recognizing the unforeseen hardships beyond her control."
