The Supreme Court quashed the National Law School of India University's separate admission test (NLAT) scheduled for September 2020. The Court held that under the National Law School of India Act, 1986, the Academic Council (not the Executive Council) holds statutory authority over admission procedures. The respondent, as a founder member of the Consortium of National Law Universities, was contractually bound by consortium bye-laws requiring use of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The Court also found that home-based online proctoring lacks transparency and integrity, and the short notice and stringent technological requirements violated students' constitutional rights under Article 14. The Court directed that CLAT be conducted on schedule (28.09.2020) and that admission to the university be based on CLAT results."
