Atul Kumar vs The Chairman (Joint Seat Allocation

Bench: 3 — Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, J B Pardiwala, Manoj Misra

In Brief

A meritorious Scheduled Caste student secured rank 1455 in JEE (Advanced) 2024 and was allotted a seat in Electrical Engineering at IIT Dhanbad. However, despite depositing fees by 4:45 pm on the deadline, his payment was not processed before the portal closed at 5 pm. The Supreme Court, invoking Article 142, granted the student admission against the allotted seat. The Court found that there was no dispute about his eligibility, the seat allotment, or his earnest efforts to comply with formalities. The judgment directs IIT Dhanbad to grant admission in the same batch, allow deferred fee payment, provide hostel accommodation, and assist the student in completing delayed coursework."
