In Brief
This case involved a land dispute in Rajasthan where a Scheduled Caste person sold land to Bhadar Ram, who was a Scheduled Caste resident of Punjab. The original owner's heirs challenged the sale as violating Section 42 of the Rajasthan Tenancy Act and Section 13 of the Rajasthan Colonization Act. The Supreme Court held that Scheduled Caste status is State-specific: a person cannot claim Scheduled Caste benefits in one State merely by belonging to the same caste in another State. Since Bhadar Ram was ordinarily resident in Punjab, he could not avail Scheduled Caste protections in Rajasthan. The Court dismissed the appeal and affirmed that the land transaction was void.
