This criminal appeal challenges the High Court's decision to quash charges framed by the trial court against the accused under Indian Penal Code sections 302 and 34 (murder and common intention). The Supreme Court held that at the charge-framing stage, a court need only satisfy itself that there is a prima facie case; an elaborate enquiry is not required. Since the charge sheet allegations indicated sufficient grounds to proceed, the trial court was justified in framing charges. The High Court erred in interfering with this order. The appeal was allowed, restoring the charges.
