Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms filed a public interest petition seeking a special investigation team headed by a retired Chief Justice to probe alleged conspiracy and bribery regarding a case before the Supreme Court. The Court dismissed the petition as frivolous, contemptuous, and an abuse of process. It held that the petition wrongly presumed involvement of sitting judges (against whom no FIR was registered) and repeated identical allegations from a previously dismissed petition. The Court noted this breached principles protecting judicial independence and that unfounded accusations scandalised the judicial system. Exemplary costs of Rs. 25 lakhs were imposed to deter repetition of such petitions.
