In Brief
The Supreme Court granted permission to file a contempt petition challenging non-compliance with its earlier directions (dated 17.12.2021) regarding timely disposal of disciplinary complaints against advocates. The Bar Council of India had issued a circular to State Bar Councils but the Court held that mere issuance of circulars is insufficient. The Court directed the Bar Council of India to ensure true and full compliance by all bodies, including verifying that State Bar Councils dispose of complaints within one year as mandated by Section 36B of the Advocates Act, and that transferred complaints are disposed expeditiously. The Bar Council was ordered to file a detailed compliance report by 14.07.2022.
