In Brief
Prem Kaur, a widow with limited estate rights, gifted property equally to her three daughters by registered deed in 1951. After one daughter (Basant Kaur) died, her husband claimed ownership of her 1/3 share. The other daughters (reversioners) argued the property reverted to them. The Supreme Court held that the gift constituted a valid family arrangement. Since all three daughters had accepted the gift with names mutated in revenue records, they were estopped from challenging it as reversioners. The Court affirmed the plaintiff's right to possess the 1/3 share, treating the arrangement as binding family settlement under Punjab customary Hindu law."
