Dharam Pal vs State of Haryana

Bench: 2 — L. Nageswara Rao

In Brief

On 10 September 1996, a furniture dealer was killed during a robbery on the Surajkund-Faridabad road while returning from Delhi. Three police officers attacked him and his employee, beat him unconscious, and robbed him of valuables. Three additional police officers later manipulated the investigation and filed a false closure report. The trial court convicted all six. The High Court confirmed the convictions. The Supreme Court upheld both judgments, finding that the original three officers' exclusive knowledge of the victim's location, combined with eyewitness testimony despite delayed disclosure due to threats, and strong circumstantial evidence proved guilt; the three other officers were complicit in the cover-up."
