Dr. Sridip Chatterjee was selected and appointed as Assistant Professor in Physical Education (Yoga Therapy) at Jadavpur University. A court challenge was filed questioning whether his Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga Education met the advertised requirement of Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga/Yoga Therapy. The High Court set aside his appointment, finding the diplomas were not equivalent. The Supreme Court allowed his appeal, holding that courts cannot interfere with expert Selection Committee decisions based on mere nomenclature differences. An Equivalence Committee of experts subsequently confirmed the qualifications were substantively equivalent, and the Court deferred to expert academic judgment over nomenclatural distinctions.
