In Brief
Ganga Ram was convicted of murder under Section 302 IPC by a trial court in 2002 and sentenced to life imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by the High Court in 2010. While his criminal appeal remained pending in the Supreme Court, he had spent 17 years in custody. The Court granted him bail on the grounds that his lengthy incarceration, combined with his colorable claim on merits, justified release pending the appeal hearing. The Court ordered him released on bond with two sureties and directed expedited hearing of the appeal.
