These consolidated writ petitions challenged the eligibility criteria for allotment of chambers in the Supreme Court Lawyers' Chamber Block. Practicing advocates contested the block period for measuring work (June 2011–June 2016), the requirement of SCBA membership, and the Delhi/New Delhi residence criterion. The Court held: the block period should be October 2013–September 2018 to ensure active practice; SCBA membership is a valid condition as it is the umbrella body even for SCAORA members; no fundamental right to a chamber exists; notices should be issued at least triennially; and the residential requirement should be reconsidered using a radial-distance approach. The petitions were disposed of accordingly."
