In Brief
NTPC Ltd. officers (Chairman & MD and GM-HR) were held in contempt by the Telangana High Court and sentenced to two months' imprisonment and Rs. 2,000 fine each. The High Court had ordered completion of a recruitment process for Junior Mazdoors (land oustees) within two months. NTPC issued a fresh recruitment notification instead of proceeding under the original 2017 notification. The Supreme Court held: the 2017 judgment only prescribed the timeline, not the method; issuing a fresh notification was not deliberate disobedience; the core task (completing recruitment and issuing orders) was substantially done; and the appellants' unconditional apology should have been accepted. The Court set aside the contempt conviction and sentence, allowing the appeal."
