Anil Kumar Poddar was found guilty of civil contempt by the High Court for violating an interim court order dated 16.07.2008 and was sentenced to three months simple imprisonment. During pendency of his Supreme Court appeal, he published critical articles about the judiciary. The Supreme Court accepted his unconditional apology tendered in court and through affidavit, where he also committed to respecting the original injunction. The Court modified the punishment by substituting the imprisonment with the apology and directing its publication in the same journal where the articles appeared, without deciding the broader substantive issues in the appeal.
