For the Puducherry : Mr vs G. Pragasam, AOR

Bench: 3 — <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

During the COVID-19 lockdown, migrant workers stranded across India faced severe hardships in returning home. This suo motu Supreme Court petition addressed the plight of approximately 4 crore migrant workers. The Court found that while states and the Centre were operating Shramik trains and buses, significant gaps existed in registration, transportation, and provision of food, water, and shelter. The Court issued interim directions prohibiting any charges to migrant workers for transport, requiring free food and water provision, mandating simplified registration with dedicated help desks, and directing immediate assistance for those walking on roads. Receiving states must provide health screening and transport free of cost. The Court allowed reasonable time for comprehensive responses on transportation plans and mechanisms.
