Indira Jaising filed a writ petition seeking guidelines for designating practicing advocates as Senior Advocates in the Supreme Court under section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961. The Court observed that such guidelines would affect Senior Advocate designation processes across all High Courts and the Supreme Court. Due to the matter's vital importance and need to examine existing guidelines in different High Courts and consult stakeholders, the bench referred the case for hearing by a larger bench constituted by the Chief Justice of India. The designation of Senior Advocates during the interim period remains within the discretion of the High Courts and the Supreme Court.
