On 19 February 2004, Virendra was fatally attacked and died. The appellants were convicted of murder (Section 302 IPC) and sentenced to life imprisonment. The High Court dismissed their appeal. The Supreme Court upheld the finding that the appellants caused Virendra's death, evidenced by ocular witnesses and medical examination. However, the Court found that injury reports of the accused, a cross-case filed by them, and suggestions to prosecution witnesses regarding the complainant party's aggression established grounds for private defence. Consequently, the murder conviction was modified to culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 Part I IPC). Having served 11½ years, the appellants were released having completed their sentence.
