Bench: 7 — Jagdish Singh Khehar, R. Banumathi, Kurian Joseph, Abhay Manohar Gupte, P. C. Pant, U. U. Lalit, Arun Mishra

In Brief

This case concerns the Supreme Court's response to Justice C.S. Karnan's non-appearance in a contempt proceeding despite service of notice. Justice Karnan sent a fax seeking an administrative meeting instead of responding substantively to the contempt petition. The seven-judge Bench held that a fax requesting a meeting cannot substitute for a proper response to a contempt notice. Finding no alternative, the Court issued bailable warrants for Rs. 10,000 to secure Justice Karnan's personal presence before the Court.
