In Brief
A woman filed an FIR against her husband and his in-laws (including mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and niece) alleging dowry harassment and threats to terminate her pregnancy. The Supreme Court quashed the FIR against the in-laws alone, finding the allegations against them to be general and omnibus without any specific role attributed to each accused. The Court held that implicating relatives in matrimonial disputes based on general allegations amounted to abuse of process, and that forcing them to stand trial despite lack of specific evidence would inflict unwarranted harm. The appeal was allowed and the FIR against the in-law appellants was quashed.
