On 25 February 2004, members of a rival truck operators union in Kapurthala attacked the office of the complainant's union with various weapons, killing his brother Nirmal Kumar and injuring several others in a dispute over transporting rice. The trial court convicted eight accused under murder and other provisions. The High Court partially acquitted six accused of murder charges but convicted them of lesser offences, while maintaining convictions against Jarnail Singh (Chaudhary) and Veer Singh (Gola). The Supreme Court affirmed the High Court's judgment, finding it properly reasoned and supported by eyewitness testimony, and dismissed the appeals."
