In Brief
This case concerned a serious security breach on 5 January 2022 when the Prime Minister's convoy was stuck on a flyover for approximately 20 minutes during a visit to Firozpur, Punjab. An NGO sought court intervention to identify responsible officers and recommend preventive measures. Rather than allow one-sided inquiries by the State or Central Government, the Supreme Court constituted an independent Enquiry Committee headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge, assisted by senior security and police officials. The Committee was directed to investigate the causes of the breach, identify responsible parties, recommend remedial measures, and suggest safeguards for future security of the Prime Minister and other constitutional functionaries."
