Mr. Kalappa M. Sankad, an employee of the Life Insurance Corporation of India since 1988, was terminated in April 2013. The High Court's Single Judge and Division Bench both set aside the termination, finding it unjustified. The Supreme Court upheld this decision, finding no grounds to support the termination. As Mr. Kalappa had died pending appeal, reinstatement was not possible. The Court awarded back wages of approximately Rs. 20.57 lakh, minus standard recoveries for provident fund and income tax. Claims for additional arrears based on notional pay rises and promotions were rejected as legally unsustainable."
