Maninder Kaur and another sought Supreme Court protection against threats to their life from private respondents following their marriage. The Court held that all citizens have a fundamental right under Article 21 to live with honour and dignity and to seek State protection against violence and threats. The Court noted that 'honour' killings and violence against couples in consensual marriages are barbaric and criminal acts. The Court directed the State of Punjab to examine the petitioners' case and provide them immediate protection if a genuine threat is found; it also authorized provision of a Protection Home as necessary. The validity of the marriage was not addressed. The petition was disposed accordingly."
