Manjit Singh was convicted of attempt to murder under Sections 307 and 324 IPC for attacking the complainant with a knife, resulting in injuries to his thighs. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment and a fine. During the appeal pendency, the parties executed a compromise deed. The Supreme Court held that while Section 307 is a non-compoundable offence and cannot be formally compounded, the compromise is a relevant circumstance for sentencing. The Court reduced the sentence to the period already undergone (17 months) and set aside the fine amount, partly allowing the appeal and ordering immediate release.
