In Brief
Manjit Singh was convicted of attempt to murder under Section 307 IPC for attacking the complainant with a knife, and was sentenced to five years imprisonment. After conviction, the parties reached a compromise. The Supreme Court held that while Section 307 offences are non-compoundable and cannot be formally settled, the compromise is a relevant circumstance for sentencing. Considering the compromise, the appellant's relationship with the complainant, and that he had already served 17 months, the Court reduced his sentence to the period already undergone and set aside the fine of Rs. 50,000, ordering his immediate release.
